First Medical Response Team, Alpha Company

The medic working with Doctor Rachel and her team organized the last of the critically wounded to be moved out to the dustoff. Counting those held for the next trip and those that were KIA.

That was when the medic noticed that the dead general was sitting upright. Looking around like he’d just woken up from a bad hangover.

“What the…” The medic swore and called out for assistance. “General Rechs, you need to lie down.”

Rechs waved the man away with one hand, flinching in pain at the movement. He looked around and struggled to his feet, listing for a bit and grabbing onto a chunk of the ruin to steady himself, his wounded leg not responding.

“Sir, let me get some fluids into you.” The medic was already stringing a rehydration pack and getting the needle ready. “You need to lie down, sir.” He turned and called out to an NCO running the casevac drops. “Hey! Hold one of the ships! We got—”

“Adrenaline,” muttered the general. He bent down and picked up a rucksack from one of the dead legionnaires he’d been laid next to. He tried to hold it, but the weight pulled him down to a knee. He felt inside for one of the ration bars he’d made everyone bring, fishing for the exact place where he made them stow them according to SOP. Right next to the extra change of socks.

He tore one open and chewed at it angrily, noting he’d been shot in the side but that there was now a thermal patch there to keep the wound covered and sedated. The bandage was running a smart pressure system. He wasn’t sure if he was supposed to eat, but he felt hungry as hell.

Actually, he just felt like hell.

The medic jabbed two micro-hypos into his neck. “Low-dosage adrenal boost. This should get you cleared up. But really, sir, you need to lie back down.”

Rechs pulled the bucket off the dead legionnaire, then slid into the ruck’s straps with no little amount of pain. He grabbed an N-1 off another dead legionnaire and checked its charge pack.

“Sir, as a medic I order you to lie down. General.”

Tyrus Rechs turned. “Can’t,” he grunted. “They need me on the line.”

Then he stumbled off into the darkness that led into the New Vega Underground.

The medic stood there, watching the old man go. He turned to a stocky nurse who’d just arrived to join him in his vigil. “You ever see somethin’ like that?”

“He’ll be dead ’fore he makes a hundred meters,” Molly said. “Mark my words.”
